For more than 50 years, W. R. Berkley Corporation, its companies and its employees have supported charitable organizations in the communities in which we live and work through contributions of both time and money. Our decentralized structure, with over 50 independent Berkley companies, many with multiple locations, enables local employees to determine the causes most important in their communities. At the same time, our global corporate reach enables organized giving to in times of global crisis.
From local food banks to disaster relief efforts throughout the world to the creation of a charity dedicated to helping the children of injured workers, our organization embodies a culture of doing the right thing and giving back to the communities we serve. Please visit our Berkley company websites for information about local giving.
More than four decades ago, our employees gathered to celebrate the holidays and enjoy the success of our Company. It was a wonderful event, but something was lacking. From that moment forward, we determined that the best way to enjoy our success was to give back to society. So we set about creating a “gingerbread house auction” that would enable our employees to raise money for the charities that meant the most to them.
Now, each year our employees create beautiful works of edible art to be auctioned off to the highest bidder at our annual holiday party. The bidder represents a coalition of employees who have banned together to raise money for a particular charity and the funds raised are matched by the W. R. Berkley Corporation Charitable Foundation. The gingerbread houses are then donated to local hospitals, and other community service based organizations to spread holiday cheer throughout the community.
